Mark Millar, the author behind Marvel’s groundbreaking Civil War crossover, says he he has had discussions about making a triumphant return to the publisher for another major event series, but that the only idea he is willing to come back to do is “quite politically tricky” for Marvel’s parent company, Disney. Yet Millar assured fans he is “working in the background” to make the idea a reality.

In the latest episode of his “Millar Time” podcast, Millar sat down with author Rob Liefeld, who recently completed his own high-profile exit from Marvel Comics after penning one final Deadpool miniseries. The two touched on what would get Millar to work for Marvel, after a nearly fifteen-year period away from the company.

Liefeld teased that he has some idea of the event series Millar has in mind, though he went only so far as to tease, “Damn. I would read that.

Millar Says He Has Carte Blanche…Except For One Idea

The 2006-2007 Civil War event series was the peak of Mark Millar’s tenure at Marvel Comics, but even more notably, its reputation as the best superhero crossover series of the past several decades still holds up to this day. More than just in terms of plot, the scope, and the degree of impact on the overall landscape of the Marvel Universe have made it a template for many future event series, and of course, it also served as the basis for the MCU film Captain America: Civil War.

Appearing on the Word Balloon podcast, writer Mark Millar

Millar left Marvel a few years later, in 2009, and has not returned since, though at times over the last several years he has teased what it would take to get him back. His comments in his podcast interview with Rob Liefeld are just the latest example, and he certainly makes it sound like there are some imposing, if not insurmountable, obstacles to his reunion with Marvel Comics. According to Millar:

Marvel just by chance, [Chief Editor-in-Chief] C.B. Cebulski said, ‘We would love it if you came back and did some kind of big event for us,’ you know. And you know what that event is, that I want to do. And the Marvel guys said, ‘You can literally do anything you want, apart from that event. Because you know the one I mean is so politically… That’s not happening yet. It’s going to happen though, because I’m working in the backgrounds. I’m working in the background to make that happen.

Of course, this has left comic book readers clamoring, or in some cases bracing themselves, to find out what exactly Millar’s idea for a series is.

Rob Liefeld Believes Millar Can Pull It Off

Before moving on from the subject, Mark Millar went as far as to say that he would take his idea all the way to the top of Disney, if needed, telling Rob Liefeld:

I’m going to make that happen, but I need to go to Disney with that one. Because it’s quite politically tricky for the company… I basically need to go to [Disney CEO Bob] Iger with this.

You’re the only person who could pull that off,” Liefeld responded encouragingly, suggesting that Millar isn’t joking. The question, then, is what exactly it is about Millar’s idea that will make Disney hesitant to let him write it. For now, fans can only speculate, and if they want to see it become a reality, make that known to Marvel Comics and Disney.

According to Millar, the door is open for his comeback, suggesting that it might be more of a matter of “when,” not “if” the two sides work out a deal,

It is impossible not to be curious about what Mark Millar has in mind, naturally, though not all fans will actually want him to return to Marvel, especially if it is for a potentially controversial storyline. However, according to Millar, the door is open for his comeback, suggesting that it might be more of a matter of “when,” not “if” the two sides work out a deal, and the visionary creator is unleashed on Marvel’s vast roster of characters once more.
