rtist Ryan Ottley loved the Gwinvincible crossover, which came out in 2017; he recently posted a throwback on X, calling it his “favorite April Fools joke” that the creative team did during the series’ run.
While Gwinvincible may have started as a prank, a real Spider-Gwen and Invincible team-up could happen one day – as Kirkman and Ottley’s hero has already crossed over into the Marvel Universe and worked with Spider-Man before.
Spider-Gwen is officially a member of the Invincible franchise – almost. At the very least, an April Fools Joke from the franchise’s creators had a version of her replace Mark Grayson as the title character Invincible, or as she was rechristened: Gwinvincible. While originating as a one-off gag, notably, considering Mark Grayson’s history with the Marvel Universe, it’s possible Gwinvincible could one day, in fact, become a reality.
On X, Invincible artist Ryan Ottley posted a throwback to the comic series’ “Gwinvincible” variant cover for Invincible #135, reminding followers of the instantly iconic crossover.
Mark Grayson may be from Image Comics, but he’s had previous comic book collaborations with both Marvel and DC. In this case, his heroic identity was nearly usurped by another break-out heroic character at the time, Marvel’s Spider-Gwen. Though Ottley called it his “favorite April Fools joke,” many fans have seriously hopped for this melding of both characters to appear again ever since.
[Gwinvincible is] a near-perfect mashup of two comic book characters from completely different franchises, making it understandable why Ryan Ottley says it’s one of his favorite April Fools’ jokes to this day.

For fans who immediately got excited about the character, the Invincible hybrid of Gwen Stacy and Mark Grayson on the cover of Invincible #135 was just a tease by Image. The cover itself features Spider-Gwen wearing Mark Grayson’s iconic goggles. Additionally, the color scheme of her costume was altered to better fit that of Invincible’s costume. Even Gwinvincible’s pose is reminiscent of Mark Grayson. Overall, it’s a near-perfect mashup of two comic book characters from completely different franchises, making it understandable why Ryan Ottley says it’s one of his favorite April Fools’ jokes to this day.
While Gwinvincible may have been a prank, Spider-Gwen and Invincible could still meet in the official comics at some point. It wouldn’t be the first time Mark Grayson has officially met a Spider-person. Long before the 2017 Gwinvincible variant cover came out, Invincible teamed-up with Peter Parker as Spider-Man in Marvel Team-Up #14. After Mark saves Spider-Man from Doc Ock, he explains to Peter that he was sent to the Marvel universe by Angstrom Levy. Then, after a short argument over superhero aliases, they proceed to team up together.
Spider-Man isn’t the only major hero Invincible has met. During his appearance in
Marvel Team-Up
#14, Mark met several iconic Avengers, including Iron Man. He also met Batman, from DC Comics, in
Invincible
#33.
As many fans have hoped for since Gwinvincible was first teased in 2017, a Gwen Stacy and Invincible team-up would be perfect for both characters.

A Spider-Gwen and Invincible crossover comic coulld happen in the future, even if Gwinvincible herself is more than a longshot. In fact, these would be two of the perfect characters to meet in canon. Gwen Stacy has traveled the Marvel Multiverse more than once, and it’s been established that Mark Grayson has been transported between dimensions in Invincible. As many fans have hoped for since Gwinvincible was first teased in 2017, a Spider-Gwen and Invincible team-up would be perfect for both characters, and would be a great way to further integrate Mark Grayson into Marvel canon.
