Former Batman Ben Affleck has finally revealed his favorite Marvel hero. One of the most respected actors in Hollywood, with over 30 years of film credits to his name, Ben Affleck is also no stranger to the world of superheroes. He first played Daredevil in the 2003 film and later Batman in the DCEU. Affleck knows a thing or two about comics, and he recently named his favorite Marvel character.

10 Gnarliest Wolverine Deaths in Marvel History, Ranked

Wolverine may be near-immortal, but he isn’t invincible. These are some of the most shocking and horrific deaths Marvel Comics has ever seen.

Superherohype cited an interview with both Affleck and Jon Berenthal from Complex magazine, in which the two actors largely discussed their new film, The Accountant 2. The conversation then turned to the world of superheroes. By this point, Affleck’s stint as Batman had come to an end, while Brenthal was gearing up for a Disney+ Punisher special. The pair were asked about their favorite Marvel characters. Berenthal, not surprisingly, said the Punisher, while Affleck confessed to having a soft spot for Wolverine.

The article did not go into Affleck’s reasons for stating Wolverine.

Wolverine is One of Marvel Comics’ Most Popular Characters

Wolverine is a Deep and Complex Character

While Ben Affleck’s reasons for liking Wolverine are unknown, many comic fans around the world already venerate the mutant berserker. Introduced 50 years ago, Wolverine would, thanks to creators like Chris Claremont, become one of the most popular characters in comic history. Wolverine began as a one-off Hulk villain, but thanks to Claremont, as well as a long stint with the X-Men, Logan would ascend to the top of the Marvel hierarchy. Wolverine has layers to his personality: at times he is cold and callous, but this is mixed in with deep compassion and a sense of justice.

Wolverine’s deep and complex characterization helped make him a Marvel icon, but the characters’ appearances in various licensed media have helped too.

Wolverine’s deep and complex characterization helped make him a Marvel icon, but the characters’ appearances in various licensed media have helped too. Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine in live-action since 2000, and his character recently joined the MCU. These films helped propel Wolverine further into the public consciousness, and made an international star out of Jackman. Wolverine has also starred in every animated incarnation of the X-Men as well. Wolverine is absolutely crucial to the X-Men’s success. Marvel has realized this, putting Wolverine into numerous titles, some even outside the X-Universe.

Actors Like Ben Affleck Are Drawn to Wolverine Because of His Complexity

Ben Affleck’s Time in Comic Book Movies Deepened His Apprecitaton for the Genre

And Ben Affleck realizes Wolverine’s greatness as well. Unfortunately, neither Superherohype nor Complex quote Affleck on why he prefers the character over other members of the X-Men, or even the superhero characters he has played. Fellow interviewee Jon Berenthal cited the Punisher as his favorite Marvel character. As Berenthal has played the Punisher for several years now, this answer makes sense, yet Affleck has not stepped into Wolverine’s shoes. Of course, no one needs to necessarily have a deep and personal connection to a character for them to be their favorite hero.

Affleck has dipped his toes twice now into the superhero pool, as noted earlier. 2003’s Daredevil film, while panned by audiences and critics, still did well enough to justify a spinoff: Elektra, starring Jennifer Garner as the titular heroine. According to legend, Affleck took the role because he thought at the time he would never play Batman. Roughly a decade later, Affleck would be cast as Batman for Zack Snyder’s DCEU film slate. Debuting in 2016’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Affleck made for a convincing Batman, one older and more experienced.

Ben Affleck Will Never Likely Play Wolverine

Yet Ben Affleck Knows a Good Marvel Character When He Sees One

It is a testament to Wolverine’s endearing nature that former Batman Ben Affleck chose him as his favorite Marvel hero. Given Affleck’s bona fides as a comic fan, it is clear he knows these characters well. Having played heroes from both Marvel and DC, Affleck’s understanding of how comic book characters work is unparalleled. Affleck no doubt gravitates towards Wolverine’s emotional complexity, and unpacking Logan’s baggage would be a daunting task for an actor. While Affleck most likely will never play Wolverine, he nevertheless gets the character and everything that makes him great.
