Best comics of the week: June 11, 2025

#5: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #9

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ #9 is a visual wonder, emotional gut punch

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #9 isn’t just a visually stunning comic, it’s also a great character showcase for Michelangelo. Every once in a while, there’s a series that reminds me why comic books are one of the best artistic mediums around. Aaron and Ferreya’s TMNT run is one of those series. Fans of TMNT, newcomers to comics, or comic fans wanting to shake up their pull list will find something to love here.

#4: Absolute Batman #9

‘Absolute Batman’ #9 is a behemoth that continues to impress

Absolute Batman #9 is densely packed with plot, a new villain, and action that will blow you away. Inside all of that, Snyder and Dragotta are still able to inject visual gags and a hallmark style you won’t find anywhere else. This book is a beast that is well worth your time.

#3: Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1

‘Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga’ #1 review: heart-to-heart

Ms. Marvel’s next stop in X-Men history brings her to one of its most famous tragedies in Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1. More than a simple retread, Lanzing, Kelly, and Reis bring out an emotionally resonant tale that engages deeply with the original story. At its heart is a meaningful connection between the first woman to join the X-Men and one of the latest, and these very different women find themselves struggling with similar internal battles. We still don’t know why Kamala specifically got wrapped up in this time-travel adventure, or if Bruno was also swept up in the time stream, but Ms. Khan is starting to get a handle on her mutant power. However, Ms. Marvel is about to enter a world where “mutant power” means something else entirely. Plus, stick around to the end of the issue for a gorgeous little retrospective on the love between Cyclops and Phoenix.

#2: Magik #6

In ‘Magik’ #6, Illyana Rasputina returns to Limbo to help a friend in need

Magik #6 is yet another shining example of the exemplary work that Ashley Allen is doing with Illyana Rasputina in this book. Each issue delves deep into Illyana’s interiority and explores what motivates and troubles the character. A key element in Magik is what we can learn about Illyana through her relationship with the supporting characters. Whether it be Cal, Dani, or Madelyne Pryor, we get new sides and aspects about Illyana that have not been fully fleshed out with other writers who have had the character in their books. This book is by far one of the most definitive runs to feature Illyana Rasputina as Magik, and it is refreshing to see how Illyana is being characterized by a competent writer who understands her the way that Ashley Allen does.

#1: Supergirl #2

‘Supergirl’ #2 raises the stakes in shocking ways

In addition to the story itself, Campbell throws some additional Easter eggs for Kara fans in the form of the character’s pre-Crisis suits. Though she ultimately settles on one that fans of 1970s Supergirl will enjoy, she also throws in another iconic look 1980s fans will easily identify. All in all, Supergirl continues to fly sky-high in terms of story and art, which promises to make Kara’s DC All-In era her best one yet.
