As Doctor Doom takes over the world with the title of Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange seeks to prove his innocence for a wrongful murder, losing the trust of his fellow Avenger Thor in the process.

Doctor Doom borrowed Doctor Strange’s Sorcerer Supreme power to defeat Varnae and his army of vampires, but the Latverian ruler broke his promise to return the title, and he successfully launched his plan to conquer Earth. Now, not only is Doctor Strange searching for a way to become Sorcerer Supreme again, but he’s also investigating the death of Asgard’s magic expert Hulda, murdered by Loki, who swears he was possessed.

In Doctor Strange of Asgard #4, written by Derek Landy with art by Carlos Magno and Espen Grundetjern, Thor and Sif have discovered Doctor Strange’s attempt to hide Hulda’s body. While they refuse to jump into conclusions, they struggle to believe that Doctor Strange simply witnessed Hulda’s murder and concealed it out of fear. Thor argues that Strange is “capable of great acts of darkness” and questionable decisions that Strange often makes “for the greater good.” Indeed, Doctor Strange’s superhero career doesn’t stand out for its spotless ethics. Even though he’s telling the truth this time, Strange has no way to demonstrate his innocence yet.

Doctor Strange’s Innocence Has Lost All Credibility

Thor Is Right To Suspect Doctor Strange Played A Role In Hulda’s Murder

Doctor Strange went directly to Thor and pitched him the idea of becoming Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. Thor pointed him in the direction of Hulda, and suddenly, Hulda was found dead. What’s worse, Doctor Strange continued his quest to gain access to Asgardian magic. Thor may trust Doctor Strange due to their shared history as heroes, but Doctor Strange’s past isn’t very helpful either.

The whole world trusted Doctor Strange’s bold decision to grant the Sorcerer Supreme title to Doctor Doom, and while it worked to defeat Varnae, it backfired horribly when Doom kept the title and took over the world — quite a predictable outcome, all things considered.

Doctor Strange Has Made Many Questionable Decisions Throughout The Years

Doctor Strange Isn’t The Most Trustworthy Marvel Hero

Doctor Strange keeps a huge amount of responsibility on his shoulders at all times. As the protector of reality, Strange often needs to make significant decisions that inevitably result in negative consequences and side effects for at least one of the parties involved. For instance, Doctor Strange agreed with the rest of the Illuminati’s decision to send Hulk to space in order to protect the Earth, only for it to backfire and motivate Hulk to come back stronger than ever and take revenge.

Later on, Strange tapped into dark magic just to stop Hulk once again. In Civil War, Strange refused to participate in the conflict, instead choosing to meditate while the war raged on.

Marvel Confirms The One Avenger Who Can Actually Kill Hulk, Despite His Immortality

The Hulk’s strength makes him effectively immortal, but Marvel has just confirmed the one way to kill him for good, and which Avenger can pull it off.

Before he gave Doctor Doom the Sorcerer Supreme title, Doctor Strange lost it to Loki, and Strange made the incredibly risky decision to unleash the Void in order to defeat Loki. Thankfully, Loki and Strange contained the Void, but the situation could have easily gotten out of hand if Strange’s plans hadn’t worked perfectly. Strange has also crafted plans that require him to become Galactus’ Herald, rekindle Mephisto’s rage, and bring Dormammu closer to his dimension. Not to mention, Doctor Strange also became Doctor Doom’s right-hand man in Secret Wars, which makes his recent mistake all the more humiliating.

There’s One Key Difference Between Doctor Strange And Marvel’s Actual Villains

Doctor Strange Really Aims For The Greater Good Every Time

There are many Marvel villains whose ambiguous goals and methods could be compared to Doctor Strange’s, in the eyes of heroes like Thor and Sif. Doctor Doom did save the world using Strange’s Sorcerer Supreme power, after all, and he often performs benevolent deeds, especially in Latveria. Just like Doctor Doom seeks to make Latveria a thriving nation, Magneto seeks protection for all mutantkind, and Namor fights to protect Atlantis. Otto Octavius served as a superhero inside Peter Parker’s body, and even Norrin Radd originally acted as Galactus’ Herald to save his home planet.

Strange’s decisions rarely succeed without some sacrifice and unwanted side effects, but they almost always beat the alternative

However, all of these characters’ benevolent goals have a very limited scope. Each of them seeks the best for their people, or for themselves, whereas Doctor Strange always aims for the benefit of the largest number of people possible. Of course, Strange’s decisions rarely succeed without some sacrifice and unwanted side effects, but they almost always beat the alternative. Surely, Doctor Strange will eventually prove his innocence to Thor and find the real culprit behind Hulda’s murder.
