Speaking at the Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo, Marvel Comics staple Claremont seemed to tell attendees not only about Evans’ return, but which character he would be playing (and no, it’s not Johnny Storm)

Potential spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret War follow.

Poor Chris Evans; the guy just can’t catch a break.

It has been months since news first broke of the actor’s possible return to the MCU after exiting as Steve Rogers way back in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and even though he’s repeatedly denied that he’s coming back, many still believe that we’ll see him show up in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, the rumor mill is churning around the ex-Captain America again, but not just from a shady Twitter account this time. No, the latest person to put Evans in the hot seat is none other than legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont.

Here’s the story: Claremont recently appeared at the Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo in Alabama, where he may or may not have blown the lid off of a few major reveals coming out of the MCU’s next big tentpole films – those being, of course, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. We’ll get to the Chris Evans bit in a moment, but first, here are some of the other things that Claremont mentioned were happening in Marvel’s Cinematic future:

Wolverine will feature in at least one of the films, in which he will kill someone “important”
The X-Men character Psylocke (unannounced as part of Doomsday’s cast) will make an appearance
Robert Downey Jr. will not only play Dr. Doom, but an alt-universe version of Iron Man
A not-corrupted version of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will feature in the story

If that all sounds like rumors you’ve heard on Reddit before… well, that may be where Claremont is getting his information. Unfortunately, it’s not clear what Claremont’s involvement in the upcoming Avengers films is exactly (if any), though we know he has consulted on MCU movies in the past. More to the point, Huntsville attendees described Claremont’s potential spoilers as part of a “ramble,” and it could very well be that the Dark Phoenix Saga scribe was merely referencing rumors he’d heard of elsewhere. In other words, take all of this with a huge grain of salt.

Still, since part of what he was talking about was the ongoing Chris Evans drama, we have to at least report what was said. So bearing in mind the extremely unofficial (and slightly confusing) nature of all of this, here’s what Claremont seemed to say about Evans’s return.

The Captain America that we know, according to Claremont, is indeed gone from the MCU. However, Chris Evans will return to the MCU, he says, playing multiple versions of that character. One of those is apparently a younger version of Cap, though we’re not sure what that means, and another is an evil version. As Marvel Comics readers might guess, the latter part of that has led to a LOT of speculation about the alt-universe Captain Hydra appearing in the MCU, but not even Claremont confirmed hinted at that.

I suppose we’ll only really know the truth of Evans’s return when Avengers: Doomsday comes out May 1, 2026, or possibly even when Avengers: Secret Wars comes out May 7, 2027. Until then, Mr. Evans, you’re probably going to have to do a lot of denying. After all, we imagine that no matter how evil a twisted Captain America could be, we imagine he’s not nearly as frightening as the Marvel Studios legal team.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans – the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:
