While the MCU and DCU tend to stay miles upon miles apart from each other, the two companies have historically mixed and mingled in the comic book universe. In the medium of illustrated stories, Marvel and DC can effortlessly blend their universes. Notable crossover events like 1981’s Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk and 2003’s JLA/Avengers opened the door for all sorts of hijinks, and there was bound to be another epic crossover event in the comics. Now, the comic companies have revealed a first look at the next pair of superheroes who will meet for Marvel and DC’s first crossover in 20 years, and it’s as exciting as fans had hoped.

Fans might never get to see the original cut.
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immoveable object? That must’ve been on the minds of writer Grant Morrison and artist Dan Mora when creating the latest Marvel and DC crossover. Two of Marvel and DC’s hardest characters to crack are going head-to-head in a new one-off event. It’s not hard to guess who that could possibly be: yes, none other than The Dark Knight and the Merc With a Mouth will be facing off in the latest Marvel and DC crossover event, Deadpool/Batman. Or, if you’d prefer: Batman/Deadpool.
Bringing together Batman and Deadpool for a killer showdown might have been a stroke of genius from comic makers. This crossover comes after DC recently revealed a new, reset version of the Caped Crusader. Following the massive success of Deadpool and Wolverine, another Deadpool team-up was obviously on the cards. Although the chaotic merc’s film could’ve changed the MCU’s plans forever, the new comic book also has to exist within a tightly planned story pipeline, so Deadpool can’t get too crazy. Maybe.
Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive first look at the black-and-red superheroes’ meeting, and it looks epic to say the least. Regarding the decision to launch Marvel and DC’s first crossover in over 20 years with Deadpool and Batman, Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley said:
“It just felt like a fun combo. I’ll be quite frank. It was nothing more complicated than that. Like, Deadpool hanging out with Batman. There’s a lot of levity to be had in there, a lot of fun. And it would also be a little bit uber violent at the same time…. Our big thing is we want to do something that is a lot of fun, showcase comics, generate excitement, and bring new readers or lapsed readers back into the industry.”
Grant Morrison hyped up the upcoming one-shot, saying, “I don’t do many comics these days, but there was no way I could turn down the chance to work with Dan Mora again, one of my all-time favorite artistic collaborators — and definitely no way I could turn down Batman and Deadpool! … Expect 4th wall-busting mayhem, owls, blood, blades, and at least one giant typewriter!”
Batman/Deadpool (or Deadpool/Batman) releases on September 17, and follows Wade Wilson as he is hired for a job in Gotham City, the home of the World’s Greatest Detective. The unlikely pairing will meet in the one-shot comic, but that is not the end of the crossover event. A lineup of mysterious “backup adventures” that feature “exciting Marvel and DC character match-ups” will be coming to comic fans as well, with details to be revealed relatively soon. Marvel and DC are also releasing another series of one-shots, centered around different characters, sometime in 2026.
