In a shock reveal, the Avengers are finally recruiting a shock Marvel Character over three decades after their official debut. Pretty much every Marvel hero has served on the Avengers at one point or another, but there are still a few select characters who haven’t yet been asked to join. And in the case of the Avengers’ new recruit, there’s a very good reason why they’ve been overlooked until now.
Up against a deadly enemy, the Avengers are recruiting someone they’ve only ever fought in the past.
Carnage Is Joining the Avengers
A New Host Has Given the Serial Killer Symbiote a Fresh Start
In a shock reveal, Carnage is joining the Avengers. A murderous member of the symbiote species and the biological offspring of Venom, Carnage is one of Marvel’s deadliest and most twisted villains. And yet as Marvel’s new New Avengers series collects “Earth’s Deadliest Heroes”, the character has been tapped for Bucky Barnes’ roster, alongside fellow killers Namor, the Hulk, Black Widow, Clea Strange and Laura Kinney’s Wolverine.
Recently, Carnage bonded with Eddie Brock, the former host of the Venom symbiote. Carnage and Eddie have entered an uneasy truce where Eddie allows Carnage to kill and consume only the worst of the worst, permitting the vicious symbiote to feed while acting as a ‘lethal protector’ to the innocent. Apparently, Bucky thinks that bringing Brock’s firepower onto his team is worth the risk of Carnage turning against them. And as long as Carnage stays fed, he may be right.

Carnage Has Technically Been a Hero Before, But Never an Avenger
Debuting in 1991’s Amazing Spider-Man #345, by David Michelinie and Mark Bagley, Carnage is the offspring of Venom who quickly and tragically bonded to serial killer Cletus Kasady, being corrupted by his psychopathy. In the last few years, Carnage and Kasady have split apart, come back together and split apart again, with the events of Venom War seeing Eddie Brock and Carnage forge an uneasy alliance – one where Eddie must keep the symbiote fed or be devoured himself. However, in exchange for working with Carnage, Eddie has access to a range of symbiote powers, once again making him a powerful hero.
Neither Eddie nor Carnage have joined the Avengers before, but Eddie was extended an invitation during his Venom days. Sadly, a battle with Carnage dragged him away from the opportunity, and he never officially joined.
Surprisingly, given the symbiote’s malevolent nature, this isn’t the first time Carnage has worked for the good guys. During the events of AXIS, Carnage’s morality was magically inverted, turning the symbiote into a bizarre ‘hero’… but still not a good person. As a ‘hero,’ Carnage became obsessed with adulation – the inverse of wanting to strike terror into his victims. Of course, this was temporary, and Carnage soon returned to slicing apart his victims using his shapeshifting symbiote biology. Of course, one thing that no-one can doubt is that Carnage is as deadly as they come – exactly what Bucky Barnes wants in order to kill off the New Avengers’ first villains the Killuminati.
It’s been a surprising year for Avengers fans, with both Elektra and Mister Immortal joining the Avengers for the first time after being recruited to Captain America’s Avengers Emergency Response Squad. Now, another unlikely face joins the team’s expansive roster for the first time, as the Avengers officially recruit Eddie Brock’s Carnage.
