With Avengers: Doomsday right around the corner, fans are desperate to know what comic events or stories, if any, are being adapted onto the big screen. But Marvel has plenty of material to choose from when adapting comic storylines for the events of the film, and too many Doom-centric adventures for just one to rise above the rest.

Marvel could never run out of stories to adapt, and some movies are lucky enough to adapt multiple stories at once. 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday has potential to do exactly that. With Doctor Doom now in charge, these are the Marvel comic stories we hope to see brought to life in Avengers: Doomsday.

Expect Both ‘Secret War’ Stories To Play A Part in Avengers: Doomsday

It’s Already Been Confirmed Both the 1984 and 2015 Versions Will Be Referenced

The Russo Brothers have already confirmed that they will be drawing inspiration from both versions of Secret Wars for the source material of their upcoming Avengers movies. With the involvement of Doctor Doom, many fans have already started to study the 2015 version by Jonathan Hickman at length in hopes of preparing for both the MCU’s Secret Wars and Doomsday movies.

Meanwhile, fans shouldn’t overlook the 1984 original Secret Wars masterminded by Jim Shooter. While Doctor Coom steals his powers in 2015’s Secret Wars from The Beyonders, the 1984 Secret Wars introduces The Beyonders.

Doomsday is currently scheduled for late 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is due for 2027. Assuming that whatever happens in Doomsday will directly affect Secret Wars, then Doomsday might focus on incursion battles before adapting the two Secret Wars for the following year in live-action.

1998’s ‘Avengers Forever’ Can Replace Kang The Conqueror with Doom

This Story Would Fit Right Into a Movie Centered Around Doom

Not to be confused with 2021’s Avengers Forever, the original storyline by writers Kurt Busiek and Roger Stern and artist Carlos Pachecho largely centers around Immortus, a next stage evolution of Kang the Conqueror that Kang is actively resisting.

Immortus is the story’s primary antagonist, and in an effort to not become Immortus, Kang reluctantly helps The Avengers in their quest against him. While it remains unclear for now what Doctor Doom’s role in Doomsday could be, he could form a similar alliance with The Avengers before becoming an enemy once more.

I’m Convinced The MCU’s Original Kang Plan Had Doctor Doom Take His Place In The Avengers Movies Before Doomsday’s Changes

Doctor Doom is officially replacing Kang as the Multiverse Saga’s archvillain, but I’m starting to think this was always part of Marvel’s plan.

It’s no secret that after Jonathan Majors’ removal from all future MCU projects, Doctor Doom took his place as the MCU’s next Big Bad. If the original screenplay for what would’ve been The Kang Dynasty was Kang-centric, then it shouldn’t be difficult to have Doom play that reluctant ally, a role he’s played for heroes previously in comics.

2021’s ‘Avengers Forever’ Fits the Multiversal Saga

Multiversal Madness Continues On Film, Just As It Did in Comics

As for the 2021 version of Avengers Forever, that one is even more likely to be referenced. Marvel followed up its 11-year Infinity Saga with The Multiverse Saga, which began in 2021 and will continue well into 2027.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are both expected to be pivotal turning points for this era of onscreen storytelling, and thus, it makes sense to cap things off with one of Marvel’s biggest multiverse events in recent memory.

Some have already cited Avengers Forever as the perfect replacement for Kang Dynasty, and it’s easy to see why when both Doomsday and Secret Wars are confirmed to sprout a huge cast of characters from different superhero movies.

The story could feature elements of Forever to justify why so many heroes and villains from different universes could manage to co-exist within the same story.

‘Avengers vs X-Men’ Could Properly Bring Mutants into The Fray

We Know the Teams Will Meet, But Will They Be Friends?

Speaking of the huge cast of characters, a prior teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday released earlier this year have already confirmed several actors from the FOX X-Men movies to be returning.

This would include Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Alan Cumming, all reprising the roles of Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler. Channing Tatum is also set to return as Gambit, who he previously played in Deadpool and Wolverine.

AvX saw the two super-teams at odds, and the same friction could take place in the movie, even if they inevitably reconcile.

The X-Men will officially meet The Avengers, but before fans rejoice, they should know that they weren’t on good terms when they met in the comics. AvX saw the two super-teams at odds, and the same friction could take place in the movie, even if they inevitably reconcile. The event gave readers some peak Avengers vs. X-Men battles, and with many of its battlers appearing in Doomsday, the MCU could directly adapt them to screen.

1987’s ‘Emperor Doom’ Complicates Doctor Doom’s Quest for Power

The Villain Wins, But at What Cost?

There are numerous Doom-centric storylines that could help form the basis of Avengers: Doomsday. Some are expecting the current ongoing “One World Under Doom” arc that appoints Doctor Doom as Sorcerer Supreme, while other options include Doomwar and Books of Doom. An oft-forgotten graphic novel called Emperor Doom might be an option that Marvel readers are overlooking.

The story sees Doctor Doom finally achieve world domination by using Zebediah “The Purple Man” Killgrave’s powers for his mind-control machine. In doing so, he deprives the planet of free will, which lends a surprising philosophical allegory into the mix.

Doctor Doom is expected to be in some sort of position of power in Avengers: Doomsday, and if adapting Emperor Doom, that power can be questioned in a captivating way. Doom’s thirst for power has always made him compelling, but when he’s forced to grapple with that power for this tale.

The ‘Infamous Iron Man’ Could Make Sense of a Mysterious Casting

Robert Downey Jr. Brings the Best of Both Worlds

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Avengers: Doomsday is fans wondering why Robert Downey Jr. has returned not to play Tony Stark again, but to play Doctor Doom. Some speculate that multiversal shenanigans are afoot, but most importantly, fans wonder if it could be related to the Infamous Iron Man storyline.

The arc is a spiritual successor to both 2015’s Secret Wars and Civil War II. Doom has maintained the memories of when he was God Emperor, but seeks to atone for the evils he’s committed now that he has a second chance and regained his face.

10 Times Doctor Doom Stole the Powers of a God – No, Seriously

Doctor Doom is an insanely powerful character even in his base form, but there have been no shortage of instances in which he’s become a literal god.

Following the apparent death of Tony Stark (which, ironically, mirrors the MCU death of the billionaire), Doom decides the best way to be the hero he wants to be is to adopt his mantle. The storyline explicitly connects Iron Man to Doctor Doom even more so than Downey’s casting has.

‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’ Could Help Usher in a New Era for the MCU

Introduces the Young Avengers

The MCU has slowly been planting the seeds for the Young Avengers to make their debut. One by one, characters like Kate Bishop, Stature, and Wiccan have all been making their first appearances in the Multiverse Saga. Slowly but surely, they all are inching toward the original Avengers and, inevitably, are bound to join together.

The most prominent Young Avengers storyline is “The Children’s Crusade,” which coincidentally features Doomsday’s star, Doctor Doom. In trying to track down the missing Scarlet Witch, Wiccan’s mother, the Young Avengers travel to Latveria to find her in the custody of Doom.

Finally, I Found the Marvel Comic That Sets the Scene for Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday is coming sooner than you think, and I’ve found the Marvel comic you need to read first before seeing the new MCU movie.
