Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier played coy when asked about his reported involvement in the MCU X-Men reboot as director, before reflecting on what his approach to the project could potentially be.
Previously, 20th Century Fox developed an X-Men film series based on the namesake collective from Marvel Comics. In 2019, Disney, the parent company of Marvel Studios, acquired Fox. Since then, several characters from the X-Men movies and associated projects have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Jake Schreier was asked what his approach to the X-Men reboot would be during a recent interview at the Mediterrane Film Festival in Malta. The filmmaker avoided directly confirming that he would helm the reboot. “Even if I were confirmed on that movie, I don’t think I would be allowed to answer that question,” he said instead (via ComicBookMovie.com).
However, Schreier did speak on what his approach to the project could potentially be without revealing too much. He elaborated, “I guess what I would say is that it always starts from character and working with great writers and collaborators, and certainly thinking about how to do something different with any project that you take on. That’s as much as I can say.”
This comes after Ryan Coogler, who directed the Black Panther movies for the MCU, confirmed that Schreier was directing the reboot. Speculations about Schreier being eyed to direct the reboot have been around for a long time.
Thunderbolts* did really well with the critics. It currently has an 88% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 349 reviews. The movie reportedly made $381 million at the global box office against a reported $180 million production budget. Shreier’s previous credits include the 2012 sci-fi comedy-drama Robot & Frank, the 2015 romantic comedy-drama Paper Towns, AMC’s Lodge 49, and Netflix’s Beef.
Michael Lesslie, the co-screenwriter of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, is reportedly penning the script of the movie. The MCU X-Men reboot doesn’t yet have an official release date.
