Bucky Barnes finally settles on The Winter Soldier in Marvel’s The New Avengers. Marvel readers gained a new vested interest in Bucky as Thunderbolts* soars through the box office, especially as the comics continue to rechristen the character under new titles. It once seemed certain that his newest name, The Revolution, was here to stay, but Marvel themselves are confirming otherwise.
The New Avengers #1 reveals Bucky Barnes is firm in his stance that he claims The Winter Soldier as his one and only namesake. Ahead of the first issue hitting stands on June 11, a preview of the premiere issue to come can be found below, along with cover art by Stephen Segovia.
In honor of the Thunderbolts* movie retitling itself, Marvel similarly relaunched its New Avengers comics under the same guise, and ironically takes an opportunity to address Bucky Barnes’ permanent identity.
Bucky Barnes Reclaims His Winter Soldier Name
The New Avengers #1 by Sam Humphries and Ton Lima
In more recent memory, Bucky Barnes was rebranded with the name Revolution. Initially, he adopted the name from his time as an undercover villain working within the Outer Circle. When those days were done, and he reunited with his best friend, Steve Rogers, Bucky decided to keep the mantle. For a time, The Revolution as a name reflected a step forward for Bucky Barnes that would help plunge his superhero career into the future, whereas The Winter Soldier seemed to keep him restricted to his past.
For The New Avengers #1, the framing is just the opposite. Now, Bucky is quick to renounce the Revolution name, saying that that isn’t a name for him as much as it “belongs to everyone” and “doesn’t need me anymore.” The former Captain America has already adorned several different codenames and the name switching had left fans both intrigued and confused, but now, Marvel is putting the debate to rest for good. As Bucky Barnes says, “I’m just the Winter Soldier now.”
Bucky Barnes is Constantly Reinventing Himself
Going from The Winter Soldier to Revolution and Back Again Makes Sense for His Journey
Despite unpacking what Revolution means to him, Bucky Barnes is already done with the title. Some will say that such frequent name changes looks as if Marvel doesn’t know what to do with Bucky and his name, but on the contrary, this is perfectly reflective of Bucky’s complicated journey. This is a man who has struggled to find his own identity after being a mind-controlled pawn to the Soviet Union during his initial run as The Winter Soldier. Bucky Barnes is struggling to find himself, and being the Cher of the Marvel Universe with constant reinventions makes for a compelling means of showcasing his hero’s journey.
The New Avengers #1 will be available from Marvel on June 11.
