Developer Skydance Interactive recently made an announcement that many saw coming a mile away: Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has been pushed back to 2026. There were doubts that Rise of Hydra would drop in 2025 as planned, considering that Skydance has yet to reveal any gameplay or even screenshots of the game, serving up little more than a CGI story trailer to shed light on this superhero-laden period piece.

While Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra follows Steve Rogers as Captain America, the Black Panther character is not actually the T’Challa that most modern fans are familiar with. Rather, this Black Panther is T’Challa’s grandfather, Azzuri.

Expected or not, the delay of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is definitely disappointing. Marvel has always been prominently featured in the games industry, but recent years have seen the brand’s prominence explode exponentially. This can be attributed, at least in large part, to the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man, which proved that Marvel can make a mark in the world of gaming without relying on its film and comic continuity. Even after stumbles like Marvel’s Avengers, hopes are generally high for the comic conglomerate to continue its growth in the gaming sector, but with Rise of Hydra getting pushed to next year, it might be quiet in the superhero games space for a while yet.

How Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra distributes gameplay and narrative could be monumental for any ensemble Marvel games that happen to follow it.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra Was Marvel’s Big-Ticket 2025 Release

Despite not being illuminated by trailers, gameplay previews, or any other sort of robust promotional content, Rise of Hydra was positioned to lead Marvel’s 2025 gaming lineup for the near future. The game, which promises to tell a dramatic and action-packed original story in the same vein as Marvel’s Spider-Man, is shaping up to be exactly what many Marvel fans have wanted: a fun, narrative-driven, single-player game that takes full advantage of its source material. Hopefully, the game will still live up to this expectation, but it won’t be this year.

This is too bad, as Marvel fans might not be getting any new titles in 2025. While there are a number of Marvel games in development across different studios, they are all shrouded in shadow to a similar degree as Rise of Hydra, the main difference being that none of these other games have received even a tentative release date. But with Rise of Hydra out of the picture, there are remarkably few superhero experiences to be had in the interactive medium this annum, which is a shame.

There’s Still a Chance for Other Marvel Properties To Fill the Void Left by Rise of Hydra

Being a bit more optimistic for a moment, 2025 isn’t even halfway over, and there’s still a chance, however slight, that another Marvel game could release before year’s end. The most likely candidate for this might be Insomniac’s Wolverine game, which was revealed back in September 2021, with virtually no official information unveiled since. Naturally, plans for the game were significantly affected by the infamous 2023 Insomniac leak, but it’s possible that a 2025 release date could still be on the table. This year will mark four years since its reveal, after all—a reasonable reveal-to-release timeline.

Otherwise, Marvel fans can still expect support for Marvel Rivals, though this is unlikely to satisfy single-player gamers. Other projects like Marvel’s Blade and EA’s Iron Man game, which have been announced much more recently than Wolverine (with the latter not even getting a proper reveal yet), are probably disqualified from a 2025 release. But with no Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, not to mention the delay of GTA 6, virtually anything could happen with respect to Marvel’s 2025 release schedule.
