Warning: contains potential spoilers for Godzilla vs X-Men #1!

The epic fight between Godzilla and the X-Men has begun, and Marvel’s mutants are teasing a “giant” combat upgrade. The King of the Monsters is leaving a path of destruction in various eras of Marvel history, and in a preview for Godzilla vs X-Men, the wildly popular 1990s version of the team faces the kaiju. And while the X-Men may be outmatched at the moment, Professor X has a plan.

Godzilla vs X-Men #1 is written by Fabian Nicieza and drawn by Emilio Laiso and Federico Blee. The preview opens with Professor X attending a meeting of high-ranking Japanese and American officials. They have asked for his advice on dealing with Godzilla. Professor X, wary of resorting to violence against the unknown, concludes that Godzilla has intelligence and can be reasoned with. However, he is open to other options, and prepares the X-Men for a potential fight by teasing that they are about to get “taller.”

Godzilla Tore His Way Through the Marvel Universe in the Late 1970s

Now, Godzilla Is Back, and He’s Attacking Every Era in Marvel History

Godzilla has been a dominant force in pop culture for over 70 years, inspiring an endless parade of films, merchandise and comic books. Godzilla’s first appearance in American comics came in 1977 courtesy of Marvel Comics. According to legend, Stan Lee was a massive fan, and arranged for Marvel to obtain the license to produce comics based on Godzilla. Godzilla, King of the Monsters ran for 24 issues, and introduced the Big G to some of Marvel’s biggest superstars. Marvel lost the license in 1979. Legal issues kept Marvel from reprinting the series, save an Essential edition in the 2000s.

All 24 issues of Marvel’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters were written by Doug Moench and drawn by Herb Trimpe.

Godzilla is as popular today as he ever has been, and has appeared in comics published by both IDW and DC. Late last year, Marvel and Toho Studios inked a new deal, just in time for Godzilla’s 70th anniversary. Marvel finally brought Godzilla, King of the Monsters back into print in a gorgeous new omnibus edition. At the time, fans were curious if Marvel’s new deal meant Godzilla would return to its universe. The publisher remained mum, but earlier this year announced a series of one-shots that would take Godzilla through Marvel history, meeting its biggest icons.

Can Even the X-Men Stop Godzilla’s Reign of Terror?

If the X-Men Can Achieve Godzilla’s Size, Then The Fight Might Be Fair

In Godzilla vs X-Men #1, it is the mutants’ turn to fight the King of the Monsters, and despite their great power, even they may be useless against Godzilla.

In Godzilla vs X-Men #1, it is the mutants’ turn to fight the King of the Monsters, and despite their great power, even they may be useless against Godzilla. The preview makes it clear that Professor X realizes that the X-Men may be heading on a suicide mission, and seeks a less violent solution. Professor X perhaps senses a kindred spirit in Godzilla: both are feared and distrusted by the world at large. With this in mind, he is reluctant to fight Godzilla. However, he must acknowledge that Godzilla is a force of nature and not subject to humanity’s laws.

Cyclops Just Replaced Professor Xavier with 1 Historic Sentence

Marvel has officially retired Professor Xavier, and with just one sentence, Cyclops proved no other superhero can lead the X-Men better than he can.

Professor X’s realization that the X-Men might be toast in a fight with Godzilla forces him to consider other options too: namely, giving size and power boosts to the team. The preview ends before Professor X can fully explain what the plan entails, but if it involves expanding the X-Men to Godzilla’s size, then maybe, just maybe, the odds will be more even. Yet even Marvel’s mightiest team might have to face a horrifying conclusion: that Godzilla cannot be defeated, and their efforts will be for naught.
