Marvel previously announced a New Thunderbolts comic to coincide with the release of the MCU Thunderbolts* film. However, much like the movie, this title was a ruse. Marvel Comics confirmed today that the new series will be titled New Avengers.

The new monthly comic will be written by Sam Humphries, who previously wrote Legendary Star-Lord and Planet Hulk. The artwork will be provided by Ton Lima, who previously worked on West Coast Avengers. The first issue will also now feature a cover by Whilce Portacio, paying homage to the classic New Avengers #1 cover by David Finch.

“Plot twist–it’s been New Avengers all along,” proclaimed Humpheries. “I promised surprises, and this is the first of many. It’s a thrill and an honor to continue the grand New Avengers tradition of team dynamics that are as explosive as the threats.”

The New Thunderbolts / New Avengers will be led by Bucky Barnes. However, he now uses the code name Revolution rather than Winter Soldier. This is also where any resemblance to the MCU New Avengers ends.

The team includes Black Widow, the Hulk, Namor, the Laura Kinney Wolverine, Clea, and Eddie Brock as Carnage. All of them are antiheroes and ex-villains with something to prove. They are also the sort to prefer to work alone and inclined toward lethal force when necessary. (And, in the case of Carnage, sometimes when it is not!)

However, the first issue will draw the team together to face a threat that no one of them can tackle alone; a team of corrupted clones of the Illuminati dubbed the Killuminati. This will surely test the New Avengers, even more than they are likely to test each other’s patience.

New Avengers #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on June 11, 2025.
