Not necessarily the smartest, the strongest, the funniest, or the most loved. But the best. We’re looking at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the most finely crafted, engaging, and interesting characters there. Here they are, in no particular order.

Bruce Banner/The Hulk
Few characters have evolved over the course of the MCU’s phases than Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). The lack of his own solo movie has robbed him of the chance of being in the spotlight as often as he should, but when he’s there, he rules the screen.
Tony Stark/Iron Man
Before Robert Downey Jr. took on the role of Iron Man, few beyond the most hardcore fans of ol’ Shellhead would have chosen him as the flagship hero of the MCU. But Downey added layers to Stark few have ever seen, and it’s no wonder they called him back for another Marvel icon, Doctor Doom.
Thanos
Josh Brolin brought a homicidal certainty to the Mad Titan that made him more chilling than we could ever imagine. He wields brutality like it’s nothing and when you look in those digital eyes, you really believe it is nothing to him.
Jessica Jones
Since the Marvel Netflix shows were deemed official MCU canon, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones has become mandatory on this list. Her portrayal of a trauma survivor – of an unapologetic alcoholic who is as ethical as she is sober – is powerful and impossible to look away from.
Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel
It is impossible to imagine watching Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan in either “Ms. Marvel” or “The Marvels” and not falling in love with her a little. She is fun, she is believable, and she is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly aging cadre of superheroes.
Luis
Nothing was funnier in “Ant-Man” or “Ant-Man & The Wasp” than Michael Peña’s Luis. He became an instant Marvel favorite and with good reason. His absence from “Quantumania” may not be why the threequel failed, but it’s indicative of why it tanked: the bad idea to pivot from heist comedies to Star Wars.
Korg
Did you hear Taika Waititi’s voice just when you read that name? Yeah, you did. Admit it. Maybe talking about his mum’s boyfriend? Come on. He’s the best.
Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Under the care of Tom Holland and Jon Watts, we’ve seen Peter Parker evolve from an awkward teen to a young man and the result is riveting. In many ways, this is the version of Spider-Man we’ve always deserved to get on the big screen.
Wong
Not Doctor Strange, but Wong, because Benedict Wong’s character has – more than any other villain or hero in the MCU – so wonderfully risen above his station in the comics. He’s gone from barely a sidekick to one of the best parts of anything involving Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch
Elizabeth Olsen’s Marvel character would have no chance of making this list before “WandaVision”, but between that and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, the Marvel creators took Wanda and transformed her into a relatable and darkly tragic character.
