Annihilus Already Took Over the Marvel Cosmos Once

The Interdimensional Conqueror nearly won

First appearing in Fantastic Four #6, Annihilus was born in the Negative Zone after a group of Tyannans crash-landed on the planet Arthros, and they released life spores that evolved into the insectoid villain. Using the Tyannan’s technology and a Cosmic Control Rod, Annihilus became powerful and determined to destroy anything that threatened his existence. After numerous attempts to take over the Earth were foiled by The Fantastic Four and other Marvel heroes, Annihilus discovered the Negative Zone’s version of the Power Cosmic, the Opposing Force, and came to take over the Marvel Universe in the Annihilation event.

During the event, Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave wreaked havoc across the universe, decimating the Nova Corps and slaughtering millions of worlds in just the first day. Having control over cosmic energy from the Cosmic Control Rod, Annihilus has immense power that rivals other major cosmic villains, such as Thanos and the Nova Core, categorizing him as a universal-level threat. Among all the villains who have attempted to take over the Marvel Universe, Annihilus was one of the most successful, with Annihilation still considered one of Marvel’s best cosmic events.

The Beyonders Are Nearly Gods

The Beyonders are a race of near-omnipotent beings created by the Celestials at the birth of the Second Cosmos. One of the most notable of their race, known as The Beyonder, was fascinated by humanity and initiated the original Secret Wars event in an experiment to understand the nature of desire.

The group would later be responsible for the second Secret Wars in 2015, after creating the Molecule Man to bring an end to the Seventh Cosmos and resulting in Doom taking their power and creating Battlworld. Being a creation of the Celestials, the Beyonders have the power to build entire universes and are capable of killing cosmic entities such as the Living Tribunal. Willing to destroy the entire universe out of sheer boredom, the Beyonders constantly threaten everything in the Marvel Universe.

The Cosmic Entity created Marvel’s most iconic cosmic villain

The Black Winter is a cosmic entity that destroyed the sixth iteration of the cosmos, leaving Galan of Taa as its only survivor, who would one day become Galactus. First mentioned in Silver Surfer Black #4 (by Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles), it would fully appear in Thor #4 (by Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Mathew Wilson, and Joe Sabino) after Galactus made Thor his herald to fight back the ancient storm. Once facing the cosmic deity, the Black Winter revealed that Galactus is its herald and has come to take him back into its service. Thor was able to defeat the Black Winter by absorbing Galactus’s full power and using his body as a bomb that reduced the Black Winter to a single snowflake in Thor #6.

However, as a cosmic force of the universe, the Black Winter can not be destroyed, which Uatu the Watcher confirmed in Hulk Vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1. Known as the universal plague and the devourer of realms, the Black Winter is one of the fiercest entities in the known universe that generates storms that can destroy anything in its path. The realm devourer can also take different forms depending on who sees it, showing the person their death within its darkness. Recently, the Black Winter has been revealed in Storm #7 (by Murewa Ayodele, Lucianno Vecchio, Alex Guimarães, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and Travis Lanham) to be a member of a group of cosmic entities known as the Enders who are linked to Oblivion and the end of all things. Making the cosmic storm even more terrifying.

One of the most successful cosmic conquerors

Thanos was an Eternal born on the planet Titan with a Deviant gene that resulted in an abnormal appearance similar to the Eternals’ mortal enemies, the Deviants. Upon witnessing Thanos, his mother saw only death and attempted to kill him. Growing up, Thanos dreamed of being a scientist like his father and was a relatively normal kid who was even able to make friends despite being more introverted due to his appearance. However, Thanos began a friendship with a mysterious girl who would later be revealed to be Death, who drove him to indulge in the more violent aspects of science and began killing other Titans to dissect them and discover why he was different. Thanos’s last act was performing this experiment on his own mother, whom he believed held the secrets to who he was. Now fully infatuated with Death, Thanos set off to the stars to begin his conquest as the Mad Titan.

Thanos has long been the universe’s biggest threat, who has been shown to be the end of all things, with the 2018 series Thanos Wins (by Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Antonio Fabela, and Clayton Cowles), which shows Thanos traveling to the end of time and encountering a future version of himself in which he had succeeded in killing everything in the universe.

The Aspirants Are the Original Celestials

These Celestials were the first life in the cosmos

When the first iteration of the universe came into being, the First Firmament created the Aspirants out of loneliness. The Aspirants were solely devoted to the approval of the First and only created life according to its design. The multicolored Celestials were later created to aid the Aspirants, but sought to have their creations evolve along with the universe. The two conflicting groups of space gods then went to war, which resulted in the shattering of the First Firmament and the creation of the multiverse.

The Aspirants and the First Firmament later returned to destroy Eternity at the birth of the Eight Cosmos following 2015’s Secret Wars event. When waging their war on Eternity, the Aspirants were so powerful that they corrupted Lord Chaos and Master Order to kill the Living Tribunal and become the new embodiment of the laws of the multiverse. While their multicolored counterparts have been able to defeat them in the end, the Aspirants have killed them all in each of their encounters and have exhibited powers beyond those of their Celestial brethren.

Molecule Man’s Power is Unmatched

Owen Reece is the most powerful being in existence

Once a regular lab technician, Owen Reece became the Molecule Man after an accident occurred while working on a particle generator. Unknown to Reece, this event was no accident but part of a grand plan by the Beyonders to end the multiverse using Molecule Man as their bomb. After discovering his true purpose, Molecule Man and Doctor Doom traveled through time, killing all of Reece’s universal counterparts, which inadvertently caused the multiverse to contract and result in incursions. Once the final Incursion came, Molecule Man absorbed the Beyonders’ power and gave it to Doom to create Battleworld in 2015’s Secret Wars.

Being a creation of the Beyonders, Molecule Man’s powers are unmatched and even exceed those of the Cosmic Entities. When absorbing the full powers of the Beyonders, Reese was able to merge the energies of dead realities to create Battleworld and later create the new multiverse. Molecule Man is also able to change the base information of reality itself, such as when he rewrote Earth-616’s history to include Miles Morales from the destroyed Earth-1610. Owen Reese’s sacrifice to save the multiverse only made him more powerful, with each universe now containing a portion of him as its anchor to reality. While Reese ultimately became a hero, his past as a villain could easily return and become the greatest threat to reality once more.

Known as the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, along with his Heralds, traverse the stars in search of planets to feed on in order to survive.

While responsible for the deaths of countless worlds, Galactus has no evil intentions but is rather a necessary force of the universe to maintain balance.
