Marvel Comics has many surprisingly complex family trees spanning several known characters. The Scarlet Witch‘s family is one such example. Yes, most readers will know of her twin, Pietro, and their on/off parental relationship with Magneto. However, the roots of her family ties go much, much deeper. Given how long this character has been around and her proclivity for warping reality, it makes sense.

Readers must consider all the connecting branches when considering Scarlet Witch’s family tree. There’s the obvious: Peitro’s family branch. Then there’s Magneto, and while he is no longer canonically her biological father, he’s made it clear that he considers himself the father of her heart. Finally, there’s Vision and his familial ties. All of which leads to a rather complicated family tree to follow.

Red Lucy

Red Lucy Is an Ancestor to the Scarlet Witch

First appeared in Marvel Comics Presents #61(1990)

Her real name is Lucy Keough

She’s a 16th-century pirate captain

Wanda Maximoff’s ancestry can be traced back to Lucy Keough, aka Red Lucy. She was a pirate captain during the 16th century. As a pirate captain, it’s safe to say that Red Lucy was fierce, a brilliant tactician, and an even better swordfighter. Red Lucy’s ship was known as The Scarlet Raider, proving that the family has always had a love of this color.

That could have been the end of the story if not for Wanda’s reality-warping powers. During the events of Marvel Comics Presents #61, Wanda Maximoff accidentally possesses her ancestor. She doesn’t take complete control, putting the two in a unique position to have a long conversation. More importantly, the two worked together to undo the magic and send Wanda back to her own place in time.

A skilled magician

Father to Django Maximoff and Natalya Maximoff

Readers know that Wanda came from a long line of magic users. One such user is The Scarlet Warlock, the father of Django and Natalya Maximoff. More notably, he’s the grandfather of Wanda and Pietro. Admittedly, not much is known about The Scarlet Warlock, likely due to the early passing of both his children. Because of this, Wanda and Pietro were never able to gain a detailed family history, and they were left to pick up the pieces.

First appeared in Scarlet Witch #3 (2016)

Also known as the Scarlet Witch

Part of a long-lineage

Natalya Maximoff is Wanda and Pietro’s biological mother and the previous Scarlet Witch. She likely inherited the title from her father, who in turn inherited it from those who came before. As The Scarlet Witch, Natalya had powerful magical abilities, including magical energy bolts, shielding, and a natural inclination to illusions and astral projection.Naturally, Natalya possessed a deep well of knowledge about magical lore, spells, and more.

The truth behind Natalya’s death is long and complicated, and it took Wanda an extensive journey to learn it all. At first, it appeared that Natalya fell while striving to save the twins from the High Evolutionary, who had kidnapped the two. Later, Wanda learned a more devastating truth – that it was her biological father who brought the end to Natalya’s life.

There was a time, however brief, when Pietro was happily married and expanding the family. He married Crystal Amaquelin, a member of the Inhuman Royal Family. Together, they would have Luna Maximoff, and for a time, it was believed she was the first half-human/half-mutant child. She would later lose the half-mutant status but gain powers through exposure to the Terrigen mists.

Not only can Luna sense the emotions of those around her, but she can manipulate them at will.

Tommy Shepherd, aka Speed

Speed Is the Reincarnated Form of Thomas Maximoff

Was Thomas Maximoff in another life, son of Wanda and Vision

Reborn, his parents are Frank & Mary Shepherd

He has superhuman speed

Tommy Shepherd is one of the more complicated Scarlet Witch family tree additions. In another life, his name was Thomas Maximoff, and he was the son of Wanda and Vision. However, that life was cut short, crushing his parents in the process. Tommy would later be reincarnated, but not to the same family. Instead, he would be raised by Frank and Mary Shepherd before being found by his uniquely extended family.

Eventually, Tommy makes his way into superhero life, taking on the name Speed. Like his uncle, Tommy is a speedster. He has superhuman speed, agility, and an accelerated form of perception—a good thing for speedsters. What makes him unique is that he can even accelerate his molecules; when done correctly, he can even become intangible.

5

Billy Kaplan-Altman, aka Wiccan

Wiccan Is the Reincarnated Form of William Maximoff

Was William Maximoff in another life, son of Wanda and Vision

Reborn, his parents are Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan

His abilities include reality manipulation

William Kaplan’s early story is similar to Tommy’s. He was once the child of Vision and Wanda before being snatched away by Mephisto. He would later be reincarnated, maintaining a magic similar to his mother’s. Like Tommy, William did not reincarnate into the same family, so his new parents are Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan. Like his brother, Billy is also quick to enter the world of superheroes. He first went by the name Asgardian before finally settling on Wiccan.

Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan, can manipulate reality like the Scarlet Witch, though it’s uncertain how these powers came to be. Billy has a fast array of magical abilities, including teleportation, clairvoyance, and flight. While Billy is still relatively young, he already has a long history in Marvel – including being one half of an iconic couple.

Teddy Kaplan-Altman, aka Hulkling or Emperor Dorrek-Vell

Teddy Is Scarlet Witch’s Son-in-Law

Married to Billy Kaplan

He’s a Kree-Skrull Hybrid

He’s currently ruler of the Kree and Skrull empires

Teddy Kaplan-Altman is a Kree-Skrull Hybrid and the current ruler of the Kree and Skrull empire. He’s also the son-in-law of the Scarlet Witch. Teddy, aka Hulkling or Emperor Dorrek-Vell, has led a complicated life in Marvel Comics. He’s been a member of the Young Avengers, was around for the Marvel Civil War and the Skrull Invasion, and was later crowned emperor of two combined empires.

Teddy is deeply, helplessly in love with Billy Kaplan. He met Billy while working with the Young Avengers, and it didn’t take long for their friendship to form into something much more. The two were married following the events of Empyre. Ironically, Teddy also has a massive and complicated family, which includes Captain Marvel, Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell, and Lauri-Ell. Technically, it can be argued that this means Wanda’s family is likewise extended.

3

Luminous

Luminous Is the Artificially Created Sibling of Pietro and Wanda

Image via Marvel Comics

She was created by the High Evolutionary using DNA from Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver

Her abilities include chaos magic, reality warping, and superhuman speed

She has a built-in kill switch

Most readers will know about Wanda’s twin, Pietro, but there’s a lesser-known sibling of the pair—Luminous. The High Evolutionary created her using a blend of DNA from both Wanda and Pietro. As a creation of the High Evolutionary, Luminous was always under her father’s control, forcing her to go against the twins on at least one occasion.

The Marvel Comics’ Deaths of Scarlet Witch, Explained

While the Scarlet Witch has died in alternate canons including the MCU, her main Marvel timeline deaths are more rare and often easily reversed.

Since Luminous was created using Wanda and Pietro’s DNA, her abilities are a bit all over the place. She has access to chaos magic, including some form of reality warping. Likewise, she is superhumanly fast. Unfortunately, her father designed her with a kill switch to ensure she remained under his control. As such, he can remove access to her abilities whenever he deems it necessary.

2

Lorna Dane, aka Polaris

Polaris Is Wanda’s Adoptive Sister

Image via Marvel Comics

She’s the daughter of Magneto

While not related to Scarlet Witch by blood, they still consider each other sisters

Like her father, she can manipulate magnetism

Lorna Dane is Magneto’s biological daughter. For a time, this meant that she also believed she was related to Wanda and Pietro. Lorna is her father’s daughter, and as such, she can manipulate magnetism. She can also absorb energies and manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum.

The two sisters grew close over the years—close enough to maintain their bond even when the truth came out. That truth was that Magneto was never actually the father of Wanda or Pietro, despite what fans had believed for years. During the events of House of X, both women proved their dedication to their found family. Lorna outright told Wanda that she would always consider her a sister. Together, they helped develop and complete a ritual that enabled the return of all mutants—even those who had perished before Cerebro’s recordings.

1

Viv Vision

Viv Vision Is Wanda’s Sort-of-Adopted-Daughter

Daughter of Vision and Virginia

She’s a Synthezoid like her parents

She is sort of Scarlet Witch’s adoptive daughter, especially when Vision is deceased

Years after his relationship with Wanda Maximoff fell apart, Vision tried again. He created and subsequently married another synthezoid, Virginia. Together, they had a family, which included Vivian Vision. Sadly, Viv was the only one of her siblings to survive, not counting her half-brothers from Vision’s first marriage. Like her father, Viv can control her density, becoming intangible or significantly increasing her density as needed.

It may be tempting to assume that Wanda would not be close to her ex’s surviving child, but this would be inaccurate. Wanda has made it clear that she considers Viv to be an adoptive daughter of sorts. The two have had several opportunities to grow their bond, especially when Vision is unreachable. Wanda has always been one of Viv’s biggest supporters.
